The Confusing English Language

Here are some reasons why the English language is so hard to learn:

1. The bandage was wound around the wound.

2. The farm was used to produce produce.

3. The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4. We must polish the Polish furniture.

5. He could lead if he would get the lead out.

6. The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7. Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to
present the present.

8. A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9. When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10. I did not object to the object.

11. The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12. There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13. They were too close to the door to close it.

14. The buck does funny things when the does are present.

15. A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't
groce and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?

One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it? Is it an odd, or an end?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?

Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and
a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your
house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by
filling it out, and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the
creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.
That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the
lights are out, they are invisible.

P.S. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"?

Why do we bring technology into the classroom?

A discussion
The minimal level is "hand out DVDs for parents and kids to watch at
home on TV."

The next level up is "hand out CDs to watch on computers."

The third level up is "bring in cameras and make short videos with the
students."

Fourth level: "videotape oral exams." Howard Gardner defines this
method of evaluation as "performances of understanding." Here is a
short quote.

When it comes to probing a student's understanding of evolution, the
shrewd pedagogue looks beyond the mastery of dictionary definitions or
the recitation of textbook examples. A student demonstrates or
"performs" his understanding when he can examine a range of species
found in different ecological niches and speculate about the reasons for
their particular ensemble of traits. A student performs her
understanding of the Holocaust when she can compare events in a Nazi
concentration camp to such contemporary genocidal events as those in
Bosnia, Kosovo or Rwanda in the 1990s.

"Measures of understanding" may seem demanding, particularly in
contract to current, often superficial, efforts to measure what students
know and are able to do. And, indeed, recourse to performing one's
understanding is likely to stress students, teachers, and parents, who

why a particular content is being taught and how best to display one's
comprehension of this content in a publicly accessible way. When
students realize they will have to apply knowledge and demonstrate
insights in a public form, they assume a more active stance to the
material, seeking to exercise their "performance muscles" whenever
possible.

But it is likely that we have avoided assessing understanding because
doing so takes time and because we have lacked confidence that we will
actually find clear evidence of understanding. Thanks to hundreds of
studies during the past few decades by psychologists and educators, we
now know one truth about understanding: Most students in most schools,
cannot exhibit appreciable understandings of important ideas.

Teachers need to assess students' understanding not simply at the end of
the course but through regular interim practice performances.

If individuals indeed have different kinds of minds, with varied
strengths, interests and strategies, then it is worth considering
whether pivotal curricular materials like biology could be taught AND
ASSESSED in a variety of ways.

WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS
Never borrow from the future. If you worry about what may happen
tomorrow and it doesn't happen, you have worried in vain. Even if it
does happen, you have to worry twice.
1. Think good thoughts about other people. Send them good wishes. Say
"thank you.".
2. Go to bed on time.
3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
4. Say "No" to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that
will compromise your mental health
5. Delegate tasks to capable others.
6. Simplify and unclutter your life.
7. Less is more. (Although one is often not enough, two are often too
many.)
8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places.
9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over

about a situation, forget it.
12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary

enormous amount of trouble.

Some students went to Key West

Wow! Look at this story by Laura
My group included Italian and French people from the school. We started
at 6 p.m. on Friday. We left the hotel and we drove very carefully. We
arrived on the north island of the Keys at 9 p.m. It was dark, so we
stopped to sleep in Key Largo, which is the first island of the Florida
Keys. We found a beautiful hotel.

Saturday morning, we went to Key West and we went to the beach. After
the beach, we were looking for a hotel for the night. Saturday night,
we had a BIG problem because we found a LOT of cockroaches. The Italian
boys in our group killed them with courage. They are brave boys.

It was a good situation because we didn't pay for the room with the
problem.

Sunday we looked for a good beach - without rocks! The name of the
beach is Bahia Honda and it is our biggest recommendation. Look for
Bahia Honda Key
about 37 miles (55 km) from Key West. It's beautiful! The sun was hot
when we arrived and it became strong. One of the Italian boys,
Alessandro, got sunburned on his nose and forehead. He's a crazy man
and a real showman (you know, those Italian people!). It was a fun trip
and I recommend that you stay at least two nights in the Keys.

your rocker, coo-coo, loopy, nuts..
A good exercise: talk about a plot of a movie but do not say the name
of the movie: a young woman is hired by a father with six children.
The mother is dead. The young woman sings, the father is pushed by
invading Germans to join Hitler's war, the family runs from Austria to
Switzerland, the father and the woman fall in love. Julie Andrews was
the woman...... What is the name of the musical film?

im sending this out to my entire list of friends and family, without
any editing, and not even too much forethought. but it's something
that's been on my mind lately and i've been repressing this feeling for
way too long, mostly to spare anyone (myself included) an uncomfortable
moment...

cindy sheehan stepped down today, as the foremost and practically LONE
public peace activist in this county. perhaps you don't know who cindy
sheehan is, or maybe you don't care, or maybe you are put-off by her for
your own reasons. it really doesn't matter who she is, though.
unfortunatlely she is all we have right now, trying thanklessly and
sometimes even shamelessly, to remind the american public that we are
currently fighting a bloody, horrible war. it's pretty significant that
she, well, gave up. she realizes that though there are a "few" people
listening, most of us, me included, have found much comfort in my
complacency. im not really making any suggestions for what actions we
should take, if any, because clearly i have no ideas. i do feel
compelled to be the thorn in everyone's side by reminding them to think
twice when they see a seemingly insignificant story about a leader of an
anti-war movement stepping down.

we are currently in a war. try to refrain from hating her for her
delivery or for her personal qualities, and just be grateful that a
public figure is speaking up for those of us who are against this war,
for your children, grandchildren, etc. when virtually no one else is
saying anything...

that's it. im sorry (sort of) to send this to those of you
who proclaim to be apolitical. it's not really even about politics
anymore, if you ask me.

i'll end this with a quote from sheehan's "resignation" letter. It
captured what i've been thinking but have only articulated to myself,
about myself... "(My son) died for a country which cares more about
who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed
in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics
with human lives."

This school improved from an "F" to an "A" in one year and the principal
won an award. The school is in this church and it receives public (tax)
money but operates like a private school (it is easy to fire a teacher
and students can be asked to leave). It is called a "charter" school
because it operates with an "agreement" with the state government.
Charter = written agreement. Here is Steve showing the empty CD

Steps A and B cost only your time and the cost of connecting to the
internet.
Step C costs $0.15 (15 cents) if you buy a cd in bulk during a sale.

The New York Times has identified a company that seeks to delay the
arrival of "old age" by giving you tasks to complete on a
computer. Many of the tasks are related to distinguishing sounds,
which are part of staying young.
Learning how to hear the difference between "live" and "leave"
is important for language learners. People in their older years lose
the ability to hear those differences – partly by not practicing the
small differences. This is why teachers who continue to teach English
as a Second Language remain robust. Look at Steve: he's actually
77 years old and he hopes to continue teaching another 20 years.
Listening to differences in pronunciation keeps his mind young.
If you don't want to practice English but you want to stay young in
your mind, you can go to the web site (above) and listen to the 4-minute
presentation. Most US people prefer practicing English in
conversation. Paying $395 for a computer program is nuts, but if you
don't have time to talk with students from Europe, Asia, South America
and Africa, well, it's better than watching TV.

This helps you as much as (it helps) me.

Comparisons are really shorthand sentences which usually omit words,

the comparison in your head, you can choose the correct case for the
pronoun.

Than I versus Than Me.
Than, as used in comparatives, has traditionally been considered a
conjunction; as such, if you're comparing subjects, the pronouns after
than should take the "subjective case." In other words, "He's taller
than I," not "He's taller than me"; "She's smarter than he," not "She's
smarter than him." If, on the other hand, you're comparing direct or
indirect objects, the pronouns should be objective: "I've never worked
with a more difficult client than him."
There are some advantages to this traditional state of affairs. If you
observe this distinction, you can be more precise in some comparisons.
Consider these two sentences:
· He has more friends than I. (His total number of friends is higher
than my total number of friends.)
· He has more friends than me. (I'm not his only friend; he has
others.)
The problem, though, is that in all but the most formal contexts, "than
I" sounds stuffy, even unidiomatic. Most people, in most contexts, treat
than as a preposition, and put all following pronouns in the objective
case, whether the things being compared are subjects or objects. "He's
taller than me" sounds more natural to most native English speakers.
This isn't a recent development: people have been treating than as a
preposition for centuries. Consider the following from big-name English
and American writers:
· Matthew Prior, Better Answer: "For thou art a girl as much brighter
than her,/ As he was a poet sublimer than me."
· Samuel Richardson's Clarissa, 1.10.58, "I am fitter for this world
than you, you for the next than me."

· Robert Southey, Well of St. Keyne, 51: "She had been wiser than me,/
For she took a bottle to Church."
· William Faulkner's Reivers, 4.82: "Let Lucius get out . . . He's

So what should you do? I don't have a good answer, other than the most
general advice possible: try to size up your audience, and figure out
whether they're likely to be happier with the traditional or the

Pool. We enjoyed the sunset that reflected on the Intracoastal
Waterway. We also met Tarpan and Dorina (who operate an art gallery

UNICEF Lunch

Our school started a new tradition: At the end of each month, we
organize lunch for everyone and charge more than we usually pay. For
example, we
each buy pizza and a drink for $8 and the profit will go to UNICEF. We

Behind Karim and Sezer you can see Erica, Isabella and Fernando.
We don't like the bus system. We prefer to drive or ride a bicycle.
Some U.S. Cities have reliable bus systems, but in 2007, the system in
Fort Lauderdale is undependable. If the schedule says 8:30 a.m., the
bus might come at 8:22 or at 8:40 a.m. So we are glad that the middle
school is close. We like to help younger kids with math and the kids
teach us FREE ENGLISH.

Steve’s opinion: It’s a good idea to change your life and find something remarkable and new, at least once during a language course. Here are TWENTY ONE categories that have something new for you (perhaps). Again, many thanks to Heinz!

It is useful to learn English while we learn something new. HUH? Yes, I was surprised about this. You will learn more English if you learn to SCUBA dive than if you stay in my class for 2 weeks. The class is just a start. You need SEVEN exposures to words to get the new words in your head PERMANENTLY. It is unusual to learn something in class immediately. We USUALLY learn after we see and hear and use the word OUTSIDE class … so I invite you to skip my class one day and go into the world – learn something new and (on the side) you will learn more English. Bravo!

slow! Remember, the early bird gets the worm.
Sezer: Now I have to find a ticket on the Internet.
Karim: In German we say, he who comes late misses the best, but it
sounds better in German.

Karim: They will play the Portland Trailblazers. A "trail" is a path
