Rice came from China. Did you know that "yaki" means "burn" and "suki"
means "dig"? Send questions to palm_tree1@hotmail.com.

Sonia wrote about volunteers at a local middle school

Many thanks to the international students who visited students at
Downtown Academy.  The young students learned about Ankara (Turkey) and
how to memorize numbers (11 x 11 = ___).  The international students
learned "determine"  (= "find") and a poem called "The
Purpose of Education."
Volunteers on Thursday:  Sonia, Isabella, Erica (Brazil) and Yuki (in
the photo).
Friday:  Yuki, Yuka, BH (South Korea) and Mert (Turkey)
One of the volunteers (Sonia) wrote a summary:
=====================================
First of all, I'd like to tell you that next week I'll come again. When
you are volunteering, you give a little bit, and you receive a lot!!
My experience yesterday was great. I spent a good time with the
students, who are very friendly.  You can feel that they are grateful
to you for being there.
If some of the students still hesitate about doing this,
you, English students, should think about this: it's a good way to
practice your English, because you have to speak in English with the
students and also they can correct you. You will learn new words, you
will have a lot of English conversation......and giving a little bit of
your time is very helpful to those children.
Thanks, Steve, for this great experience.
I'll be there next week

Find a charity on the internet and make a presentation.  What should we

In particular, I am concerned about global warming.  What can I do with

Search "Global warming charity"   or  "global warming

Make a one minute speech on Tuesday or Wednesday

Sezer is invited to our class to contribute.
Every student should go to another class and find another student who
wants to talk to me about global warming.  What can we do to reduce the
impact of global warming?  I want to donate $10 to make a difference.
What should I do?

On the way to volunteer at the middle school

Behind Karim and Sezer you can see Erica, Isabella and Fernando.
We don't like the bus system. We prefer to drive or ride a bicycle.
Some U.S. Cities have reliable bus systems, but in 2007, the system in
Fort Lauderdale is undependable. If the schedule says 8:30 a.m., the
bus might come at 8:22 or at 8:40 a.m. So we are glad that the middle
school is close. We like to help younger kids with math and the kids
teach us FREE ENGLISH.

HERE IS THE MESSAGE THAT I RECEIVED FROM HEINZ… MANY THANKS TO HEINZ!

Hi, steve!

I was visiting this web site today and really thought you'd find the

information interesting. Here's the link:

http://www.learningstrategies.com/Birkenbihl.asp

heinz

Steve’s opinion:  It’s a good idea to change your life and find something remarkable and new, at least once during a language course.  Here are TWENTY ONE categories that have something new for you (perhaps).  Again, many thanks to Heinz!

It is useful to learn English while we learn something new.  HUH?  Yes, I was surprised about this.  You will learn more English if you learn to SCUBA dive than if you stay in my class for 2 weeks.   The class is just a start.  You need SEVEN exposures to words to get the new words in your head PERMANENTLY.    It is unusual to learn something in class immediately.  We USUALLY learn after we see and hear and use the word OUTSIDE class … so I invite you to skip my class one day and go into the world – learn something new and (on the side) you will learn more English.  Bravo!

Write to me your opinion…    s2314@tmail.com

From Camila

From: Kmi Kovelo <kmikovelo@hotmail.com>

Here's a picture of my life as a student in Fort Lauderdale. Do you
think I learned a lot of English? Of course!! Do you have questions?
Write to me!
Camila, Brazil

I'm going to the NBA

Karim: I got a ticket to see the Heat. Poor Sezer! He was too
slow! Remember, the early bird gets the worm.
Sezer: Now I have to find a ticket on the Internet.
Karim: In German we say, he who comes late misses the best, but it
sounds better in German.
Sezer: Who will the Heat play?
Karim: They will play the Portland Trailblazers. A "trail" is a path
and to "blaze" is like burning. So they run so quickly that they burn a
road behind them.

So-so

George: If you are tired of junk food, go there.
Sarah: It is similar to other fast food, but it is more spicy and hot.
Benoit: McDonalds is the worst. I prefer Subway over salsa. But the
Cheesecake Factory is the best.
Aurèle: I like Latin foods. I went to Brazil once.
Steve (the teacher): Wait until you try Eurobread! That place is the
best of all!

Sezer and Karim at Eurobread Cafe

We were hungry so we went to the best sandwich place in Fort
Lauderdale.

"This is the first time in America that I have eaten real bread," said
Karim. "The other bread is too soft. I prefer European bread."

"Tomorrow we should go to Cafe Europa," added Sezer. "I like the
seafood pizza."

"If you like Mexican food, you should go to La Salsa," he continued.
"Salsa means a liquid, a sauce for meat."

International Tutors visit Downtown Academy in Fort Lauderdale

International visitors who are improving their English are helping local
students in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades with schoolwork. The students,
ages 11 to 13, are delighted to learn about other countries and
cultures. The visitors enjoy learning new vocabulary that their ancient
teachers don't
know. Sifizzle!
